- Furthermore Program Offers Grants in Nonfiction Publishing
- An initiative of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Furthermore program supports nonfiction book publishing about the urban experience; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues. Deadline: September 15, and March 15, annually.
- Reader's Digest Foundation RFP
- The Reader's Digest Foundation has announced that it will donate a total of $1 million to nonprofit organizations through a new initiative called "Make it Matter." Grants will be inspired by individuals who are taking action and giving back to their communities in significant ways. Every month, the foundation will select one individual's story of good deeds done and grant $100,000 to a nonprofit organization in honor of that individual. Reader's Digest magazine will then feature that person in its new column, "Make it Matter." Deadline: Rolling
- Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge Invites Students and Teachers to Address Environmental Issues
- The Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, and the National Science Teachers Association have partnered again to invite students and teachers across the United States to become "Agents of Change" in improving their communities through the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. The deadline for elementary-level entries is January 31, 2010; the deadline for middle-school entries is March 15, 2010.
- Powered by Service Offers Funding to Seed Youth-Led Service Projects
- Usher's New Look, a nonprofit organization founded by entertainer Usher Raymond IV that supports underprivileged youth in using their talents to become community leaders, has announced the launch of Powered By Service, a new initiative to encourage young people around the world to become involved in addressing the most pressing problems facing their communities — from preventing malaria and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS to ending gang violence and increasing access to clean water. - Bank of America Accepting Applications for Neighborhood Builders and Local Heroes Programs
- The Bank of America Charitable Foundation Neighborhood Excellence Initiative is designed to recognize, nurture, and reward community organizations, local heroes, and student leaders who are helping their neighborhoods achieve excellence. The program makes grants and awards in forty-four U.S. markets and in London, United Kingdom. Deadline: June 1, 2010.
- EPA's National Award for Smart Growth Achievement
- Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. This competition is open to public- and private-sector entities that have successfully used smart growth principles to improve communities environmentally, socially, and economically. The application period is open from February 8, 2010 to April 5, 2010.
- Home Depot Foundation Accepting Letters of Interest for Sustainable Community Development Awards
- The Home Depot Foundation's Awards of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development recognizes public-private partnerships that have successfully developed projects and/or initiatives that promote and exemplify a more sustainable community. The program seeks to recognize sustainable projects that take a holistic, integrated approach, whereby sustainability planning, affordable housing, and the creation of green spaces and planting of trees are inextricably linked. Deadline: March 31, 2010.
