The Valhalla Wilderness Society promotes wilderness and wildlife preservation, sustainable development, and resource rights. The grant supports a project to designate 620,000 acres on Princess Royal Island, British Columbia, as a refuge for the world's only concentration of kermode bears, a rare, white-color variety of black bears known as Spirit Bears. The Spirit Bear park would be located in the largest intact temperate rainforest on the continent, forming one of the largest contiguous protected areas in the world.
