The University of Maryland, BaltimoreĆs Department of Neurology is involved in a research project involving the Quileute Tribe of La Push, Washington, to determine sources, exposures, and risks of consuming fish and shellfish containing Domoic Acid, a marine toxin associated with harmful algal blooms. The grant supports this research project, which will study members of the Quileute Tribe who live where coastal waters have recorded the highest levels of Domoic Acid, identify persons at greatest risk for illness, educate tribal members about the risks of eating potentially contaminated fish and shellfish, and present the study results to governmental regulators.
